It’s Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand today: our war memorial day. The local paper here is doing a feature on surviving WW2 vets, of whom there are only 100 left in NZ.

This dude served as an army truck driver, participating in the Africa and Italy campaigns, and driving with with enough gusto that he earned himself the nickname “Speedy”.

Before the war he’d dreamed of a career in motor racing, so when he got home he spent his demob bonus on a 1926 Bentley 3 Litre.

He went on to set a land speed record in a home built aero engined special, and to be an engine builder for the Brabham F1 team, assembling the engines with which Denny Hulme won the world championship. Later in life he took on the more sedate sport of gliding, which he did for nearly 40 years, only giving it up in his 80s

You sir, are The Man. Thank you for your service, and for reminding the rest of us that our dreams will still be there to be pursued when the bad times are over.

So true.

So many of these living legends walk amongst us, they don’t brag or boast about what they’ve done in their time on this planet. They simply go about their days, superheroes walking amongst mere mortals.

More should be done for those that entered hell and made it through rather than just those that didn’t.

Lest We Forget,

We Shall Not Forget.

My grandfather born in 1906 told me at age 95 that he felt like in his mind that he was twenty. May you and all of us be the dude.
